Helping Windsor and Maidenhead residents put their Wellbeing 1st

Royal Windsor and Maidenhead Borough residents are benefitting from a programme to help them put their health and wellbeing first, thanks to a £54,000 grant from the Department of Health Warm Homes Healthy People scheme.

The money – already put to good use through a range of winter Wellbeing 1st projects – is now funding a pop-up shop-style event in the Nicholsons Shopping Centre (outside W H Smith) from Wednesday 18 to Saturday 21 April (10am to 4pm).

Everyone is welcome to come along and find out more about a safer, healthier and independent Windsor and Maidenhead lifestyle – including saving money on fuel bills, keeping mobile and preventing falls, keeping fit and well, local activities and support. There will also be competitions, prizes and lots more!

Importantly, there will be opportunities for residents to feed their views into local priorities for health and wellbeing.

Cllr Phill Bicknell, cabinet member for Windsor and Maidenhead highways, transport and environment (including environmental health), said: “This is a real opportunity to bring a holistic message about wellbeing into the town centre for residents, their friends and families. There is a lot of support available in the community and this event will provide information about where to find it.”

Cllr Simon Dudley, cabinet member for adult and community services, added: “Encouraging residents to think about their own needs and wellbeing can help prevent a crisis happening.

“All too often people are not aware of the support available until things get urgent. Planning ahead and accessing help in a timely way can prevent a crisis, make difficult times easier and improve wellbeing overall.”

Celebrating Windsor and Maidenhead Adult Learners’ Week (12 to 18 May)

The theme of learning is the appropriate subject of a photography competition being launched to celebrate this year’s Windsor and Maidenhead Adult Learners’ Week in May.

The title of the competition – organised by the Royal Windsor and Maidenhead Borough’s Family and Community Learning Service – is ‘Learning from the World We Live In’. The challenge goes out this week to all budding Royal Borough photographers aged 19 and over to get snapping and capture the essence of learning for adults in the borough.

Prizes include vouchers for studio photographic sessions and complimentary photos from Venture Photography of Marlow and Alison Crown Photography of Maidenhead, tea for two at the Sir Christopher Wren Hotel and Spa in Windsor, a year’s membership of Maidenhead Camera Club and Waitrose vouchers.

Cllr Eileen Quick, cabinet member for Windsor and Maidenhead children’s services, said: “The challenge is a great way of getting people to think about how the activities planned for Adult Learners’ Week inspire them to take part. The challenge of producing a photo to illustrate the importance of the week will hopefully help people to really think about what it means to them – and how much the activities on offer can stimulate interest in a range of activities. So get out those cameras and let’s have some inspiring photos!”

Entries should be sent to Jigisha Solanki, information officer at the Family and Community Learning Service, Town Hall, St Ives Road, Maidenhead, by Friday 4 May. Terms and conditions will be published on the Adult and Community Learning page of the Royal Windsor and Maidenhead Borough website at www.rbwm.gov.uk/web/ed_acl_info_htm

A selection of entries will be displayed at the Town Hall during Adult Learners’ Week (Saturday 12 to Friday 18 May).

The competition is an innovative forerunner to the popular Adult Learners’ Week which will once again be offering taster workshops ranging from cookery and IT to photography and even positive attitudes.

Windsor and Maidenhead Cllr Quick added: “Adult Learners’ Week has become more and more popular over the years as a fantastic way of trying something new and potentially making a real difference to your lifestyle and wellbeing. It provides some fantastic opportunities to find out how fun, interesting and inspiring learning can be as an adult. So why not take up the challenge this year?”

Further details about the complete range of workshops will be available shortly. In the meantime for further information about lifelong learning opportunities in the borough or about Adult Learners’ Week, contact the Family and Community Learning Service on 01628 796584, visit www.rbwm.gov.uk/web/ed_acl_info_htm.

Mayor’s Windsor and Maidenhead Charity Ball – tickets now on sale

Tickets are now on sale for this year’s Windsor and Maidenhead Mayor’s Charity Ball – one of the social highlights and main fundraising events of the Mayoral year.

Mayor Cllr Asghar Majeed and the Mayoress, his sister Naheed, are expecting a huge turnout in support of the black-tie event to be held on Friday 4 May at Coworth Park in Ascot.

Proceeds from the Windsor and Maidenhead ball will be distributed between several of the charities participating in the Mayor’s successful charity initiative “Do-eat then Do-nate”. The innovative scheme has seen more than 60 restaurants and businesses across the borough sign up to the scheme in support of a wide variety of charities nominated by the Mayor and Mayoress.

Windsor and Maidenhead Cllr Majeed said this week: “The Mayor’s Charity Ball is always one of the highlights of the Mayor’s calendar and raises a great deal of money for charity.

“We have been really pleased with the support we have already received for our “Do-eat then Do-nate” scheme – and we are hoping that this generosity will continue and people will bring their family and friends along to what promises to be a wonderful evening in beautiful surroundings.

“I am also delighted that the event is once again being supported by popular local resident Laurie Holloway and his trio who will provide the entertainment for the evening.”

Windsor and Maidenhead Tickets costing £100 each include a champagne reception, three course meal with coffee and wine and entertainment. There will be an auction for valuable prizes donated by local and national businesses, borough residents and well-wishers.

There will also be a souvenir programme for which advertising space is now on sale. Overnight guests can take advantage of a special accommodation rate of £325 per room inclusive of breakfast and VAT.

Further details are available from Alison Singleton, Mayor’s Secretary, on 01628 796223 or email Alison.singleton@rbwm.gov.uk

Couple sentenced for Windsor cannabis factories

A couple have been sentenced after cannabis factories were discovered at properties in Windsor and Wraysbury.

David Healy, aged 34, and Julia Bruzas, aged 42, both from Waylands, Wraysbury, were sentenced at Reading Crown Court on Monday (2/4), after police uncovered a sophisticated cannabis production operation.

Officers initially attended a property in Bridgeman Drive, Windsor, on 8 June last year and found 22 cannabis plants growing in the one bedroom flat. Scenes of crime officers found 24 fingerprint marks in the flat which related to Healey.

One 15 June, police attended his home address in Wraysbury, Windsor to arrest him and found that one bedroom of the property had been converted for the cultivation of cannabis. The room contained 25 cannabis plants and there were another 23 in the back garden. Nine deal sized bags of cannabis were also found on a downstairs table. Healy and Bruzas were both arrested.

Healy pleaded guilty to two counts of producing cannabis and one count of possessing cannabis when he appeared at Reading Crown Court in December. Bruzas admitted permitting the production of cannabis.

They were both sentenced on Monday (2/4). Healy was jailed for three years for the offence at the Windsor property and received a concurrent three year sentence for the Wraysbury incident. Bruzas was sentenced to a community order of 150 hours unpaid work over a year.

Windsor Det Con Iain Watkinson, who led the investigation, said: “This was a fairly sophisticated cannabis production operation, made worse by the fact that their three year-old daughter was living with them at the Wraysbury property.

“I hope that the sentence handed to Healy acts as a deterrent to other tempted to become involved in this illegal activity.”

Go-ahead for new Maidenhead all-weather pitch at Cox Green

Work begins later this month on the new all-weather football pitch at Cox Green Leisure Centre in Maidenhead.

Members of the Royal Windsor and Maidenhead Borough’s cabinet have given the go-ahead for the construction of a second full-size all-weather pitch specifically for football at the leisure centre in Highfield Lane.

A similar 3G football pitch available for public and school use was installed by the borough last year at Charters School in Ascot.

Work on the new pitch – made of long artificial turf with a rubber base which allows for studs on players’ boots – is expected to take 16 weeks, with completion scheduled for the autumn ahead of the football season.

The £346,777 contract was awarded to Cleveland Land Services following a tender exercise which saw six companies invited to bid.

The existing 3G all-weather pitch is now at maximum capacity and there is already a waiting list for the second.

Cllr Simon Dudley, cabinet member for Windsor and Maidenhead adult and community services, said: “I am delighted that we are able to further demonstrate our commitment to providing even more facilities specifically for football in the borough by approving this contract for a much-needed second all-weather pitch at Cox Green.

“It will be a huge boost to the community in Cox Green and will help to meet the increasing demand for outdoor leisure opportunities in the area. Currently many local residents have to travel to Slough and Reading to practise football – this new pitch will mean they will be able to train nearer home which will be much more convenient.

“In addition, Cleveland Land Services are experienced in working on school sites which need to remain open during the project. This will be the case on the Cox Green site.”

The Windsor and Maidenhead project, funded entirely by Section 106 developer contributions, is expected to generate an additional annual income of £20,000.

The facilities at Cox Green already include four changing rooms specifically for football.

To book the new pitch from the autumn contact Chris Kilminster at Cox Green Leisure Centre on 01628 796881.

Windsor woman’s dishonesty led to £24k in overpaid Windsor and Maidenhead benefits

A Windsor woman has been sentenced to a 12-month community order of 200 hours unpaid work after dishonestly claiming more than £24,000 in housing and council tax benefit and income support.

Tracey Appleton, 30, of Burton Way, Windsor, pleaded guilty at East Berkshire Magistrates’ Court Slough on 8 March to three counts of dishonestly making a false representation, offences under Section 111a of the Social Security Administration Act 1992.

At Reading Magistrates’ Court on Friday 30 March Miss Appleton was also ordered to pay £100 in costs in addition to the community order.

The case arose after a Royal Windsor and Maidenhead Borough officer found that Miss Appleton was living with an undeclared partner while claiming income support and housing and council tax benefits as a lone parent.

This resulted in overpayments of £24,133.67:
• £12,416.21 in housing benefit between 23 June 2008 and 13 June 2011
• £2,172.82 in council tax benefit between 23 June 2008 and 13 June 2011
• £9,544.64 in income support between 16 June 2008 and 9 June 2011.

Cllr Richard Kellaway, lead member for Windsor and Maidenhead finance, said: “This was a conscious effort to defraud the public purse – which in effect means the money of hardworking, taxpaying residents – and hopefully this sentence will act as a deterrent to anyone considering a similar course.

“However, we do appreciate that there are those who have unintentionally received overpayments and I would encourage anyone in this situation to contact us to discuss a mutually acceptable solution.”

The council’s confidential and free Beat the Cheat line for reporting suspected benefit fraud is on 0500 353300.
