Sportsbug fever set to sweep the Maidenhead Royal Borough
Get the Maidenhead bug – and enjoy a slice of the sporting action this month!
That’s the challenge to Maidenhead young and old alike as the Royal Borough’s Sportsbug programme – with the theme of getting more people more active more often - is rolled out in time for summer.
For two weeks during May (Saturday 12 – Friday 25) more than 40 sports clubs across the borough will be opening their doors and offering the opportunity to try new sports or brush up on old skills – all for FREE!
The action-packed innovative sports programme – to be held at leisure centres, schools, community centres and recreation centres across the borough – features sporting activities ranging from football, rugby, karate and judo to windsurfing, kayaking, scuba diving – and even ceroc (modern jive dancing!)
On Saturday May 19 the action centres around the borough’s three leisure centres for a Sportsbug open day from 10am to 2pm. At Windsor the fun coincides with the centre’s 20th birthday – with opportunities to have a go on a surf simulator, try rock climbing and take part in a penalty shoot-out competition to enjoying free treatments from beauticians and Team Health.
At the Magnet in Maidenhead there’s parachuting, trampolining, face painting and roller skating, to name just a few; and at Charters in Sunningdale there’s a wide choice including fencing, archery, pool, karate, cricket and netball.
Mark Camp-Overy, Maidenhead leisure services project manager, said: “This is the first year the Sportsbug programme is being rolled out across the whole borough.
“It is a fantastic way of giving more people the opportunity to get active – as well as showcasing the great range of sports and activities on offer in the borough and helping clubs to boost their profile.
“These free sessions will enable people to discover new interests and enjoy the benefits of a more active lifestyle. So come on everyone, give Sportsbug a try!”
Full colour leaflets with details of all the Sportsbug sessions and events are available at borough libraries, leisure centres, Customer Services Centres at the Town Hall, Maidenhead, and York House, Windsor, and on the borough website at www.rbwm.gov.uk/web/sdev_index.htm
Some of the sessions during the fortnight must be pre-booked – for further information contact Mark Camp-Overy, leisure services project manager, on 01628 796227.
