Young and old invited to Windsor and Maidenhead museum planning day

Windsor and Maidenhead Children can have fun dressing up and residents of all ages are invited to have their say on what they would like to see in the new Windsor & Royal Borough Museum, at a museum planning day in the Maidenhead Room, Guildhall, on Saturday 6 March from 10am to 3pm.

In April 2009 Cllr Simon Dudley, lead member for Windsor and Maidenhead adult and community services, announced that a new museum would open in the Guildhall – where it was originally housed between 1951 and 1982.

Since 1982 the museum collection has been in storage, with various artefacts being used for displays around the borough, including the local studies area in Windsor Library.

The family-friendly, educationally inspirational and interactive museum is set to open in spring 2011.

Windsor and Maidenhead Museum staff and volunteers have been working hard developing ideas and themes over the last few months, while members of the project team have been consulting with English Heritage and other experts. There are now detailed plans available from the designer with ideas for the use of this prestigious and historic Grade I listed venue.

Cllr Dudley said: "It’s a great shame that much of the borough’s museum collection has been hidden away for so long. Royal Borough residents, quite rightly, called for a solution and it is exciting to see this long-held dream move a step forward.

"We now need your feedback on these proposed ideas and your opinions on what you would like to see in the new museum."

The open day will be an informal drop-in session where visitors can talk to Windsor and Maidenhead museum staff and volunteers, see the designs, discover more about the collection, understand the plans and have their say about what the museum should contain.
